Iron Log #13 - biomes o' plenty

Looks like today’s dev log is lucky number 13, on the 13th! I’m also going to start labeling these posts with a caption, mostly for me to remember what I talked about in each post at a glance. “Iron Log #8” doesn’t tell me much!

Patch 0.0.6 was pushed this morning which includes…

New Biomes

In a previous post I shared some major changes to the way the game does world generation. At the time it was incomplete in my eyes, there were only 3 or 4 main biomes and they all shared the same few trees/rocks/grass. Now this update is still not the final version but it’s another major step forward and one I feel happy with (for now).

The main takeaway from this change is there are now 9 distinct biomes that I can tune to spawn specific foliage, resources, enemies, etc. Currently they mostly all have resources you can gather wood, stone, and metal from. But as I add new resources to the game some might only be available in specific biomes, ones that might also have harder enemies! The biomes are as follows: Plains, Forest, Mountain, Desert, Taiga, Canyons, Jungle, Wasteland, and Ocean.

Other Changes

  • Player run speed has been increased.
  • Player jump height has been increased.
  • Lots of new item and part models.
  • Player now must be on the belt part of a conveyor to move, you can stand on the sides to stop moving.
  • The conveyor belt texture has been updated to look like it’s moving.
  • Updated storage container graphics.
  • Added basic recipe tooltips to unlocked items in the tech tree.
  • Fixed some building collision issues.
  • Fixed issue with mining drills harvesting items from nearby resource nodes instead of the one they are on.
  • Reduced some research costs in the tech tree.
  • Reduced crafting time for gears and basic research packs.
